What is 3D

3D animation is digitally modeled and manipulated by an animator. In order to manipulate a mesh, it is given a digital skeletal structure that can be used to control the mesh. A 3D (three-dimensional) film is a motion picture that enhances the illusion of depth perception. Derived from stereoscopic photography, a regular motion picture camera system is used to record the images as seen from two perspectives (or computer-generated imagery generates the two perspectives in post-production), and special projection hardware and/or eyewear are used to provide the illusion of depth when viewing the film. 3-D films are not limited to feature film theatrical releases; television broadcasts and direct-to-video films have also incorporated similar methods, primarily for marketing purposes.

Difference between 2D and 3D

2D and 3D refer to the actual dimensions in a computer's workspace. 2D is "flat", using the X & Y (horizontal and vertical) axis, the image has only two dimensions and if turned to the side becomes a line. 3D adds the "Z" dimension. This third dimension allows for rotation and depth. It's essentially the difference between a painting and a sculpture.
